Are mothers commonly subjected to workplace discrimination?

Workplace discrimination comes in many forms, and, in many cases, it is directed at mothers who have a career. Some of the workplace discrimination directed at mothers often relates to when their motherhood conflicts with their work duties. While it is illegal to demonstrate any kind of discrimination, employers across the country are often guilty of this, including in Florida.

In another state, a woman was fired the day after she took off work to prevent her special needs child from waiting outside his school in the cold. At the time, her supervisor had been understanding, but the next day she was accused of violating the personnel policy. There are also instances where women are fired after they have a baby and need to have a few weeks off.

Many women believe that they are protected by the Family and Medical Leave Act, which is supposed to protect women and family members who have to take time off for family reasons. Unfortunately, there are exceptions and exemptions to this law. Employers cannot fire someone for getting pregnant, but otherwise they do not have to hold a woman’s job for delivery or issues with children.

In many cases, women become victims to the policies of their employers. Women can empower themselves by fully understanding all of their family leave rules. In some sad cases, Florida women and mothers have been victims of workplace discrimination because they chose to have a family. Female employees who have children have rights and should take steps to protect those rights if they ever feel that they have been violated.
