The U.S. Department of Labor recently released its findings on the number of work-related injuries and illnesses in 2013, the most recent year for which complete data is available. While the figures revealed that American workers stayed a bit safer and healthier than they did in 2012, they also served to highlight the dangers that many still face on a daily basis.
For instance, the DOL found that U.S. workers missed an astounding 1.2 million workdays in 2013 to recover from work-related injuries and illnesses, while 33 percent of all these injuries and illnesses were comprised of musculoskeletal disorders.
As shocking as these numbers are, it’s important to remember that those workers whose injuries or illnesses are serious enough to keep them out of work for a prolonged period can often rely on workers’ compensation benefits to help make ends meet during these undoubtedly difficult times.
It’s also important for those workers who have faced retaliation from their employer for simply trying to secure the work comp benefits to which they are otherwise entitled to remember that they too have options.
The unfortunate reality is that workers’ compensation retaliation occurs in workplaces throughout Florida all too often, taking the form of everything from harassment and poor performance reviews to adverse changes in working conditions, demotion and even outright termination.
